She knows everything about self care, which we love having these conversations with her. So, Diane, thank you so much for being here for this conversation today.
Diane [:Well, thank you. I am excited to be here as always.
Shawna Rodrigues [:As always. I love it because, you know, solopreneurs, we need a little bit of that that piece. And you're one of us. You're in this in this boat with all of us and helping us look at 2025 and three ways that we can really make this our year. So thank you for being here.
Diane [:Thank you for having me.
Shawna Rodrigues [:Yeah. So as we start to look at 2025, we have to first pause and look back. So what would you say from 2024, and a little before that? Because you've had your transition into being a solopreneur over the last year and a half or so. What would you say is something that you've really gained and thought that you've gotten over the last year, year and a half about about being a solopreneur and doing this work for yourself?
Diane [:Oh, man. It's hard. Yes.
Shawna Rodrigues [:It is, Yes.
Diane [:It is not, and I say that genuinely. I spent 24 years in a 96% male dominated profession, what you know, doing risky stuff, going into burning buildings, lots of trauma exposure, and it was not as hard as being a solopreneur. I mean, it's just really it's a challenge. And I think over the last year and a half, I've really had to dig really deep about myself and learn more about me and, you know, trying to navigate it while still, you know, also being wife, mom, and everything else. And it just is so it's hard.
Shawna Rodrigues [:Yes. And it's so different. I think that's a part of it. And we've a lot of individuals that I've met in this time of working with more folks that are on their own, out on their own, especially with podcast network, that we're used to doing something that we've, like, slayed and we've been good at, and we've, like, gone over all these hurdles, and we've proven ourselves and shown ourselves. And then it's like, you have a lot of class applicable skills, but you have feel like you're starting over from scratch in a lot of ways. And it's like having to, like, get your footing all the time.
Diane [:Yes. And that could be by noon every day. Yeah. And it's different every day. So it's like, oh, man. It's really I think there's the saying of Semper Gumby, always be flexible, and I feel like that is something about being a solopreneur that I just you don't know what you don't know, and it's just a very uncharted territory is how I felt for a long time.
Shawna Rodrigues [:Well, and it's constantly changing, I feel like, that we are in this exciting time in history where all the tools, all the things that we utilize are constantly developing and changing. So it's also it makes your head spin the things that you're figuring out. And we have a lot at our disposal, but it's a little bit overwhelming sometimes too.
Diane [:Absolutely. And there's no there are. There's several checklist of what you should do and, you know, who you should follow and what you need to do to be successful. And what I've learned is it's not a one size fits all approach. And there's just some, you know, like, I'm unique from what you do, which is unique. However, we're still solopreneurs. So there's this common foundation, yet you can't say you need to do this or you need to do that. And I find myself chasing all these shiny objects of what I should do and what you know, because so and so does it.
Diane [:So that's gotta work, and I think it's really just sorting out what works for you.
Shawna Rodrigues [:Yes. And I think that having those conversations with other people to realize that you're not as alone, I think that when I started the podcast network, I knew that part of it was to have this this road map that, like, folks would follow as they went along to figure out, like, okay. This is how we do this, how we do this, and to make sure we solved a lot behind the scenes of connecting to this and this and doing the editing and getting everything where it needed to be. But I've learned and seen that the connection time that we have when we all get together and commiserate, and I've always been impressed and surprised at the past the conversations have taken. And we end up having really great conversations about how to handle difficult topics and how to to navigate these different things, and it ends up being a little different than we expect because we're we're all, for the most part, solopreneurs that are doing the work of the podcast and that we end up having these different conversations and different connections because we can all connect around that. And I think that finding people that you can and to understand the journey is so beneficial because the people that from my former career and the people that I love and have around me aren't necessarily people that understand it. And even if they've started businesses 20 years ago or 30 years ago, it's not the same as what we're all trying to navigate right now online and doing this business stuff. So trying to find people that can understand a little bit, and it helps you normalize what you're experiencing a little bit too, I think.
Diane [:Absolutely. And it's just so important to have that connection with other people that, you know, because you just don't know what you don't know. And I feel like there's a little bit of imposter syndrome and a little bit of fear and a little bit of ego because, you know, of wanting to be successful and not necessarily afraid of failure because I don't know that I'm afraid of failure, but I don't also want to be seen as, oh my gosh. She's such a hot mess. You know? So there's just a lot of, like, internal dialogue that's going on. And if you don't have other people that you can share with and talk to and, like, sort it out with, I think it can become paralyzing.
Shawna Rodrigues [:And you don't know the direction that you're headed. You don't know that, oh, actually, like, going through this swamp is actually part of the journey. Like, you are going the right direction. You're still headed where you thought you were going. The swamp is on the way. So so keep going to the swamp. You're headed the right direction. And to do that Exactly.
Shawna Rodrigues [:Yeah. I think I don't oh, we were we went this summer out on our paddle boards, and we're trying to get to where we put in the paddle boards. And it was helpful when we finally crossed, and we'd be like, how much further? Is this even the right is this even the right trail? Because it feels like we're never gonna get to where we put these paddle boards in. And it was helpful because we actually worked with somebody. It's like, actually, there was a place you go through the reeds that was just back over there. And it was so helpful because who knows how long we've been walking through these trees with these paddleboards on our heads trying to get to where the water was. We didn't know that there was a place in the reeds you cut through. Right? And we probably would have eventually gotten there, but it'd been 10 times worse.
Shawna Rodrigues [:So it was really nice to have somebody that can say, oh, oh, no. No. Turn around. Go back through the reeds about, you know, a little ways, like, 5 minutes back down the trail. So it's nice to have somebody because we're all trying to get to similar places and to have somebody say like, no. The reeds. Believe it or not, you go through the reeds.
Diane [:Exactly. And that's the path. And the path is windy and different, and there's a lot different shoots of it. Like, you can take different, you know, whatever meandering trails through it, but it's just knowing that somewhere on the path is someone else that you can talk to and be like, alright, girl, I've got you. Like, don't worry. This is normal. Or, you know, no, you're not a hot mess. Or, you know, just that validation of being seen and being in a brave space with other courageous humans and women that are doing the same thing even if it's a different, you know, business that they're running.
Shawna Rodrigues [:Yes. Yes. Because there are constantly ways that things intersect. Just so helpful. And we do have 3 very specific things that we've come up with as our tips. And the first one is really just around clarity being the most important thing and to be aware of like, we already mentioned the shiny objects that can get us kind of off center. I know that you and I have talked about in the past, the money we spend on these things to give us clarity, but all they do is muddy things up sometimes. And so sometimes clarity, like, you need to know how you find clarity and what you need to find clarity and to give yourself space.
Shawna Rodrigues [:I need space. I don't know if other people some people need, like, a regimented path to follow and whatever else, but whatever you need to find clarity that you give yourself that. Because that's what gets to be overwhelming, I think, is just having too many options, too many directions, too many things. And we often have, like, should I do this? Should I do this? Should I do this? And whether you need a coach, whether you need a a program, whether you just need time alone for thoughts. Like, whatever you need for clarity, you to prioritize that because clarity is the opposite of the clutter and the overwhelm.
Shawna Rodrigues [:And so that's the 5th step is finding clarity. Yes?
Diane [:Absolutely. And I would just confusion is the other side of that coin, the clarity. So if you are confused right now, you're close. It's that, like, alright. I'm really confused. Cool. You're really close to getting clear.
Diane [:It's that, like, when like, confusion is this, oh, what is the universe trying to tell me? It's telling you need to get more clarity.
Shawna Rodrigues [:Yes. Yes. And for you to instead yeah. For you to find what you need to, like, to to to move through that, to get to the other side of it, and to be realize that, yes, they're not that far apart. You just need to know what you need to find clarity. And that's when we get into our remembering what we've done in the past that has helped us find that. The one we've had and that's why a lot of us have former careers and former stuff that we've done and other things that we've done in our life for us to go back. And, like, so when I was making a decision about deciding that I was gonna go on this path to be an entrepreneur, right, like, what gave me the clarity to go on this path? Was it that I went away for a weekend and sat and stared at the ocean, and that's what I need? Because raising my hand right here, that is where I find clarity.
Shawna Rodrigues [:Was it that I went through stuff with a coach who was very good at clearly talking through things? I'm a verbal processor, which a verbal processor. Like, what in the past has been good for you? Was it journaling? Was it like, what helps you get that? And for you to do that instead of just howling ahead in this trust and the overwhelm, realize that you need to take a step back and do something to find that. Right?
Diane [:Right. It doesn't it doesn't have to be confusing, and it doesn't have to be hard. And you get to choose your hard. And I think what ties on a natural progression of that clarity is connection. You know? For the second tip is connection to yourself, connection to all the other versions of yourself that got you where you are today. Because there's a lot of answers and a lot of gold if you look at that. You know, they say hindsight is 2020. So if you can find that connection of, man, this just you know, I read somewhere that it was supposed to be x, y, and z, and that this is how I have to, you know, set up my calendar to do my own thing, but it just doesn't feel right, and it's causing confusion.
Diane [:And I'm not very clear, and it feels really weird, and I don't feel like I'm connected to what matters. That is a, like, a time out, put a pin in it, and get connected. You know, whatever rituals, whatever, you know, it's that doubling down on taking care of yourself. I think, you know, we wanna rush, rush, rush, and it just leads to burnout so quickly. So if we're connected with what fuels us, what grounds us, what lights us up, and we have that mindset, that connection, you know, that whole body connection, mind, body, and soul, it just gives you that space that you were talking about and that permission to trust yourself. And, you know, like, I know who I am, and I'm connected to who I am. And this entrepreneurial solopreneur journey is hard, but I know I can get through it because of the connection that leads to the clarity.
Shawna Rodrigues [:Yes. No. And that's so beautiful and important. I think that that's the places that I get myself turned around and confused is when I start listening to everyone else. And I'm like, oh, I'm new to this. I have to listen to everyone else. It's like, no. This doesn't fit me.
Shawna Rodrigues [:It's not gonna be new to this space. It's because it doesn't fit me. And so these are great tools, and I should try them. It doesn't hurt to try them. But guess what? They don't work. They don't work. And it's not because there's something wrong with me. I'm not an imposter.
Shawna Rodrigues [:It's not an imposter syndrome that is no. It just doesn't work for me, and that's okay. And so it's good to, like, be open to things and try things and okay to say that, no. This isn't right for me. And it surprised me how long it's taken me to say no to things in a new space when in my old career, like, nope.
Diane [:Nope. Nope. Exactly. Well, it's, you know, it's that comfort zone. So when you're in your comfort zone, your zone of comfort, you're like, oh, man, I can do this in my sleep. Well, now we're stretching ourselves. And that's why, you know, I think a lot of times when you hear the word connection, you you're thinking of your connection to other people. Yes.
Diane [:That is important. But I specifically, that connection to yourself, that inner knowing, your inner wisdom, the, you know, the the grit that it takes within you to try it again if it doesn't work out. To, man, that didn't go great, but I'm connected to whatever it is you need to be connected to within yourself to trust and trust the process.
Shawna Rodrigues [:Yes. And when you hear from the folks who've actually, like, gotten to the other side in their solopreneur entrepreneurial journey, like, that's what you hear is that they believed when no one else did. And sometimes when people told them no to what they were doing, it got them to dig deeper and find their own yes. And you need to be able to do that. You need to be able to believe in that case. And I love, like, one of the podcasts that I do at times is author express. And one of the reasons I love doing that is hearing the journey of authors because it is the same as the solopreneur entrepreneurial journey that, like, you have to hear, but you had to believe in the story you have to tell, and you have to believe in your journey to get there because not everyone else most no one else is going to. And yet the stories of some of the great books that have come to life are the stories of the books that the person that believed in them was the person writing them, and they had to battle through so many noes to get to that.
Shawna Rodrigues [:Yes. And so to be able to be the one person to connect to that inner knowing because you're gonna need it. You're gonna need it to get to the other side.
Diane [:Yeah. You gotta believe in yourself. Because if you don't believe in yourself, and that doesn't mean that it's easy, it doesn't mean that it's, you know, like, oh, yeah. Totally. Every day, I wake up with a confidence level 10. Absolutely not. Yet I know that I have, like, I have the ability to get there, or I have the I can take action to, you know, push through it because I have that connection with myself.
Shawna Rodrigues [:Yes. And I think that's when we get to 3, which is community as our tip is to find your community. Because there will be days where that inner knowing like, you need to have a safe space to have hard days. And I think that finding your community is finding your safe space to have hard days. Because, ultimately, you do have to be the one that believes in yourself, and you do have to one that believes and knows that what you're doing. You have that clarity. This is the path you want to be on. This is what you wanna be doing.
Shawna Rodrigues [:But you also need to have, on those hard days, a place where it's safe to be questioning, transitioning, wrestling with things, and figuring things out. And that's why you need to find your community.
Diane [:Yes. I mean, it's, you know, they say you're a result of the people you the 5 people you spend the most time with, and that's great. I do believe that. And yet, I don't know many women solopreneurs that are, like, trying to forge this path on a personal level. You know, there's the fan girl, the ones I follow on Instagram, social media, but, you know, to actually know and be like, oh, man. I'm with my people. Build that tribe of, you know, picking each other up or offering tips or, like you said, that safe space is so important. It's just it really, you know, allows you to grow.
Diane [:It allows you to, you know, those awkward moments where you can last and get it out that you don't not everyone's gonna understand, but everyone's gonna understand if they're in the same, you know, ocean trying to get to this, their destination.
Shawna Rodrigues [:Yes. Exactly. That there's those hard moments and those times where things don't go as smoothly and as easily, and it doesn't mean that the world is over. It's just like another hump and another bump. And we all understand that there's those days, like, we were talking, before we started this recording that today there was, like, technical issues that were causing challenges for people that I work with. And so it was me getting to these little details that I need to do that I you know, I'm somebody who, believe it or not, I run a podcast network, and yet tech is not my favorite thing y'all. Like, I I do this because I wanna take that stress off of other women. So so it's not my favorite thing, though.
Shawna Rodrigues [:And so that stuff is the stuff that, you know, I have to, like, get in the zone to do that, and that stuff can feel a little bit like a grind sometimes. And so that stuff make it hard to get to the creative pieces and the fun pieces and the building pieces that I wanna be doing sometimes. And it's nice to have people that can understand, like, oh my gosh. Yeah. This morning, I was ready to do this creative fun part of my work, and yet these emails came in and these calls came in and these things happened. And it's been 3 days, and I haven't gotten back to the fun piece. And so it's nice to have people to understand this so other people that are like, oh, like, your whole job is not fun? Like, you can't just do whatever you want?
Diane [:Right. I mean, there is this level of freedom, and I think the other beautiful thing about community is the celebrations. Right? Like it is. You can lean hard on community to get through this messy solopreneur journey, and you can also lean hard to hype you up and lift you up because they know. They understand that, oh my gosh, I grew my email list by 5 subscribers. Yes. That's amazing. Right.
Diane [:Like, it's it's the little wins that may not seem like a big deal, but man, we are cutting cloth from the whole thing. We're not just scrapping it together. So when you're chartering charting a new course or even if it's, you know, there's somewhat of a path, it's just really nice to be surrounded by a community that lifts you up, that holds space for you, that can really, you know, help you get through the bumps, the reads, the messy, the muck, whatever metaphor you wanna use. It's really nice to know that you're not alone.
Shawna Rodrigues [:And celebrates all those steps and understands that it takes time to build these things and do those things. I still one of my husband now husband it still takes we've only been married, what, now? Like, 7, 8 months. And so, like, my it took a while to get to call him fiance, and now, like, husband is still new to term. But, one of his good friends like, I should be grateful that he was so impressed with me that he figured that I'd be selling millions of copies of my novel when it came out. But my novel came out during a pandemic. I didn't get to do, like, even book signings. Right? So it was definitely not whatever it could have been. And I was excited about every single book I sold and every single reader I heard from it, every little thing that happened with it.
Shawna Rodrigues [:And then my one friend of my husband would be like, so, like yeah. So what are, like have you reached, like, you know, 300,000? Like, a 1000000 copies? Like, how many copies have you sold? I'm like, throw it off. Hey.
Diane [:Don't have
Shawna Rodrigues [:it. Hey. None of your business. Instead of people actually writing publishing books that understand that it was very exciting. I sold as many as I had and made as much money as I did. Right? Instead of people that have, like, these glossover versions of, like, the the beautiful life that they see on on on Instagram of authors and whatever else instead of, you know he probably was on Instagram. But, you know, this aggrandized life that they imagine that you all have you write one book and then everything's perfect ever after instead of, like, it's not quite that simple. The reality of we do this because we love it, and we build things, and things build slowly, and to have a community that will celebrate every little 5 more people on the list.
Shawna Rodrigues [:And we have a breakthrough day, and we're in all of our breakthrough day, and we get very excited. And so to have people that will celebrate those wins and knowing that us being in that part of our brain where we're celebrating and building on the wins is what's gonna get us through and make us be successful and get where we wanna go and to be able to have those goals and build on them and be in that mindset. And so constantly looking at that gap and constantly looking at how many we don't have and how we're not to that place. I still remember one of the courses I took, and they like, in one minute, it would say like, oh, you know, before you even launch this, you need to have, like, 200 on your mail list. And the next time I they said, like, a 1,000 on the mailing list. I'm like, how many do I need to have on my mailing list? I don't belong here. And I didn't belong there. I shouldn't have ever taken that course, and I should have listened when they named those pieces because I hadn't built my list by that much yet.
Shawna Rodrigues [:But it's like, wait. Do I listen to this? Do I not listen to this instead of, like, just being where you are and it being okay that you don't have to, like it's one thing at a time and to have people celebrate you one thing at a time.
Diane [:Exactly. And I think, you know, a friend of mine, she said this, and she was also a guest on my podcast, but she said that it's the tortoise and the hare. She's like, the turtle wins eventually. It's slow and steady, and it's really hard to balance that when it's constant information overload of do this, and I made, you know, a 8 figure business by doing these three simple things. And I'm thinking, actually, no. I'm guessing it was a lot more than 3, but I didn't know that at first. Right? Like, I had to, like, go through it and be like, oh, this is much more challenging and not to scare anyone away. Right? Like, it's such a beautiful, fun journey, and it's just more fun with friends.
Shawna Rodrigues [:Yes. And that's yeah. And having the community to have you be able to focus on that, and that's the difference is being able to be in the emotion you wanna be in during the journey and to have yourself surrounded by the people that make it an enjoyable part of it so that you're enjoying it instead of trying to, like, no. I've gotta get to my 10 k months before I can enjoy any of this instead of like, no. You gotta enjoy it along the way because it takes time to get there. So share this and share this journey to people that you actually enjoy being with. So that's yeah. Those are the keys.
Shawna Rodrigues [:So our keys, we're gonna we're gonna recap our keys. So our key is clarity Connection. Self connection, connection to self. I love that. And then finding your community. And whatever that looks like for you, whether that's local, whether that's online, whether it's whatever else it is, but those are the things you really need to be able to make 2025 your year to be able to get to the level you wanna be at and meet the goals that you're looking for. Those are the things we're gonna narrow it to 3. Those are the 3 things we're gonna narrow it to.
Shawna Rodrigues [:And we have an exciting opportunity, because you might already have your community, which would be awesome if you do because I know that that, that I have my community with my podcast separate little ways. I have my but I know that's something that I've looked for the most. And that it seems that I get glimpses of it. Like, I got to be in this great group, this match for my thing that was this summer that was, like, a short lived thing. And I found little groups here and there, but, like, something that's constant. Like, the podcast network has been that for me, but, obviously, that's had to have a podcast. A little work. This is a bigger thing.
Shawna Rodrigues [:But to have, like, a constant like that is something that's been harder to find, especially one that had dApp because there's big ones that you just are like a cog in a one of many. But to have one that actually feels like a connection has been hard to find. So you and I together are launching the solopreneur sisterhood, which is meant to be exactly that for folks who want to be able to have a place to connect, to cheer on others, and to be cheered on, and to have that community aspect to keep building on.
Diane [:Absolutely. And, you know, I think back to it's been a little over 2 years since we connected because I wanted to start a podcast. And in that 2 year time frame, we really have, you know, have had this sense of community and lifting each other up and bouncing ideas off of each other. And, you know, I just it's invaluable to me even during bumps. Even when it was, you know, harder times, it was like, okay. Shawna's there to cheer me on.
Diane [:Cool. I know I can rely on that. You know? Like, I don't feel like celebrating my wins, but you did and you do, and I really appreciate that. And as I, you know, I I just am so grateful to have that type of connection of where we can. And why not, you know, grow that and share that with other solopreneurs that will reap those benefits because they're, they're magical. And on the hard times, they're really magical, and on the good times, they're really magical. So it's just nice to have that space.
Shawna Rodrigues [:Yes. Absolutely. So valuable to have that space. And we've definitely talked about the different things we've been part of and what's worked really well and been the most helpful on this journey. And that's why we wanna continue having this conversation. So we're actually going to begin with actually having 25 or 2025 initial individuals that come into this cohort. So we can make sure that we still keep it, you know, intimate, and then we'll grow from there, like, after we get this initial group kind of settled in together to be able to have, like, the weekly opportunities to connect. It'll be virtual since you and I do not live in the same state.
Shawna Rodrigues [:So it's and we managed to build so far, the first time we met, it's like, wow. This is the first time we're meeting.
Diane [:Right. Right. And it was a year after we knew each other.
Shawna Rodrigues [:Yes. Which is so hard to believe. It's so hard to believe to have this opportunity to to connect virtually, like, on a weekly basis so you do feel connected and then still have we're gonna be on member up to have, like, the community. So you don't have to Facebook if you don't or whatever social media. You don't have to be on social media. You could actually have a community outside of that where you can go to connect with other folks. This kind of a sales community to be able to connect and then have weekly opportunities to be face to face. And that will be working on things like mindset.
Shawna Rodrigues [:We'll have opportunities for co working and goal setting and different things. And as the community comes together to really identify what the priorities are, but to have that cadence that those are those opportunities. And if you need them twice a month instead of 4, that's fine too. Like, what you need. But to be able to have that and meet the needs to be able to be a community to support that. So I'm so excited we're finally doing this.
Diane [:I am too. And I think it's really you know, you get what you want out of it, and yet it's so filling. It just will fill your cup because it will be that safe space. It will be that, you know, place to go when you have a question or to learn. So coming with an open mind and being curious about what it's all about and to also be a, you know, the first. Right? To really help us set the container and the groundwork is a great opportunity.
Shawna Rodrigues [:Yes. As one of the founding members of it to help us kind of outline and put things together. So yeah. So we're it's officially, like, starting all the meetings are starting in mid February, but we are going to open up the wait list and start connecting with folks to get the scents and and closing off once we get our our 25 women. And think that the title kinda gives it away, solopreneur sisterhood, but this is for people who identify as women and women to be part of this group to really be this exciting opportunity. So if you look in the show notes, there is a link for you to jump on that wait list and to connect with us if you guys have more, questions if you just get we'll have our, our ways to connect with us there. So you can talk with us if you have more questions about this. But we are so excited for this opportunity to get off the ground and what we can build and what we can do with because we know how valuable it's been to have a smaller group and to to see how we can build on that so we can offer that to more folks.
Shawna Rodrigues [:Because, really, we want more women to be successful in business and to build on that and expand on that in a way that's really valuable and effective. And even if you don't join us, which, why wouldn't you? But even if you don't join us, I feel like those tips are gonna be really valuable for you going into 2025 and beyond as well.
Diane [:Absolutely. They're good utility tips for life.
Shawna Rodrigues [:Yes. Yes. Exactly. So, yeah. So here's to 2025 and to being able to find a little bit more clarity, a little more connection to self, and your community, however that looks for you, to be able to do that. And if you're interested in solopreneur sisterhood, jump in to the show notes and go ahead and grab that link and get in touch with us and get on that wait list so that we can learn more about you and see how that all connects.

Shawna Rodrigues [:Yes. A little stat. Exactly. Exactly. And all those things, yes. They usually add a little bit more of, are you using this? Have you tried this yet? More of that.
Diane [:What about this?
